Monarchs in November

April 23, 2014

The Eastern Monarch migrates to the Alabama Gulf Coast mostly in the fall before launching off for a long flight that will land them for the most part on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. The eastern population migrates both north and south on an annual basis but no individual makes the entire round trip.Female Monarchs lay eggs for the next generation during these migrations. The average life span of a Monarch is less than two months.

I took this photo in my back yard in Gulf Shores of a bottle brush plant full of Monarchs fueling up before taking flight across the Gulf to Mexico!
